The Short Answer
Umbrella or excess liability insurance provides additional coverage above the limits of your underlying general liability, D&O, and other primary policies. It activates when a claim exceeds your primary policy limit and can pay the excess up to the umbrella limit.
A $1 million general liability policy sounds like a lot — until a catastrophic injury claim, a multi-plaintiff lawsuit, or a large stadium property damage claim exceeds that limit. An umbrella policy with $1M–$5M in additional coverage protects against those tail-risk scenarios.
Umbrella policies are relatively inexpensive compared to increasing primary policy limits. Many youth sports organizations can add a $1 million umbrella for $200–$500 per year. The cost-benefit of umbrella coverage is one of the best in the insurance market.
Players Health strongly recommends umbrella coverage for any organization with more than 50 participants, any program that uses public facilities, and any organization running tournaments or large events where catastrophic loss scenarios are more probable.
